JOB SUMMARY
This position is for a highly skilled mechanic responsible for maintaining and repairing various gasoline and diesel-powered equipment, including heavy trucks, construction equipment, emergency vehicles, and specialized systems with computerized instrumentation. The primary goal is to minimize equipment downtime by diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and computerized systems, ensuring fleet reliability, operational efficiency, and safety. The job involves performing preventive and emergency maintenance tasks, using independent judgment for troubleshooting and repairs under general supervision. Completed assignments are inspected to ensure they meet quality and safety standards. Additionally, the role may include mentoring junior staff and promoting best practices in maintenance and safety protocols.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintains and repairs a variety of automotive/heavy/commercial lawn equipment such as but not limited to trucks, tractors and mowers, hydraulic systems, front end loaders, backhoes, skid steers, and gasoline and diesel powered engines.
- Tunes and repairs gasoline and diesel engines, turns brake rotors and drums, tests, adjust, and repairs instrumentation systems.
- Maintains/repairs snow removal equipment, plows, salt spreaders, salt boxes and equipped hydraulic systems, pumps, lines, and connections, replaces hydraulic cylinders, turns brake rotors and drums, tests, adjusts, and repairs instrumentation systems.
- Repairs or replaces brakes, air and hydraulic systems, cooling, ignition, exhaust, electrical and fuel systems, replaces springs and axles, installs/ diagnoses vehicle/ equipment telematics system.
- Maintains/repairs small engine equipment such as but not limited to lawn mowers, chain saws, snow throwers, etc.
- Helps to coordinate major jobs and collaborates with less highly-skilled mechanics.
- Performs minor welding and blacksmithing work as required.
- Tests equipment on the road to locate defects and to check repair work.
- Utilizes fleet management software for proper record keeping that includes logging of all dispersed parts/materials related to daily repairs.
- Responds to emergency situations as they arise and participates in snow removal.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
- Technical or Vocational School Beyond High School in automotive repair theory and practice preferred.
Experience
- Six (6) years automotive repair and preventive maintenance experience required;
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the employee to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- High degree of ability in diagnosing defects in automotive and industrial equipment.
- Thoroughly knowledgeable and skilled in the methods of automotive and industrial work, materials, tools, testing devices, and techniques used in the current repair of heavy automotive equipment including gasoline and diesel engines and hydraulic systems.
- Thorough knowledge of two (2/4) cycle engines.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to interpret and work from service manuals, specifications, and diagrams.
- Ability to work independently and make judgments and decisions within established parameters.
- Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships and to communicate effectively.

Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
- Within 180 days, obtain Forklift Operator Certification issued by AACPS or Equivalency required; and
- Within 1 year, obtain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification issued by National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence required; and
- Hold or be eligible for API 653 Aboveground Storage Tank Inspector Certification issued by American Petroleum Institute preferred; and
- Upon hire, Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required; and
- Within 120 days, obtain Driver's License (DL) Class B Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required; and
- Hold or be eligible for Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A (Maryland) issued by Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) preferred.
- Proof of a good driving record required.

- Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position.

CAREER LADDER REQUIREMENTS
Qualification Requirements for Employment in Higher Grade as a New Hire or Transfer requires:
- Three (3) additional years of successful experience required.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A (Maryland) issued by Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) required.
- Forklift Operation Certification required.
- Achievement of a minimum of four (4) ASE Automotive Certifications, with the ultimate goal of achieving a Master Automotive Certification required.
- Achievement of API 653 Aboveground Storage Tank Inspector Certification required.
Eligibility for Consideration for Advancement from Lower Grade to Higher Grade requires:
- Two (2) years continuous successful experience in the position at the Lower Grade level.
- Mastery of all responsibilities and duties of the position.
- Evidence of completion of additional training that may be recommended by supervisor and/or participation in approved professional development programs or courses, approved in advance by the supervisor. Successful completion of a minimum of one professional development within the last two years is required. Successful completion of job specific professional developments identified on the job description, performance evaluations and/or the supervisor’s documented recommendation are required.
