JOB SUMMARY
Instructs, motivates, and supports under-achieving students to enroll and be successful in increasingly rigorous courses that prepare them for college admissions. Demonstrates the ability to collaborate with the school faculty and members of the community to promote student success. Supports the mission to eliminate the achievement gap and promote academic achievement for all students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reviews student applications for the AVID program, conducts student interviews, and facilitates the student selection process.
- Serves as lead teacher on the AVID site team.
- Acts as the site coordinator of the AVID program, its personnel, and its students.
- Serves as the AVID liaison with school staff, parents, and members of the community.
- Models AVID teaching techniques and conducts professional development for the faculty members.
- Supervises and provides technical assistance to the AVID tutors.
- Sets up individual learning programs for AVID students who are encountering difficulty in their courses.
- Using the AVID curriculum, plans and delivers effective AVID elective class lessons.
- Keeps parents informed of program developments and student progress through regular communication and by hosting after-school and evening training events for families of AVID students.
- Collects and analyzes data to make programmatic and instructional decisions that support student learning.
- Complies with AVID Center and district requirements for annual certification.
- Organizes fundraising activities to cover expenses such as field trips, award ceremonies, and special AVID events.
- Arranges for guest speakers from businesses and educational institutions to present to AVID students on a variety of topics.
- Organizes campus visits to colleges and universities. Plans field trips to places of historical, cultural, educational and professional interest.
- Assists teachers of AVID students, supporting the academic needs of the students while ensuring that the AVID students are fulfilling their academic responsibilities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
- Bachelor's Degree in applicable field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required.
Experience
- Two (2) years successful classroom teaching experience required.

- Knowledge of materials in field of specialization.
- Knowledge of current trends and research in field of specialization.
- Demonstrated ability to speak and write effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with students, staff and parents.
- Knowledge of and proficiency in technical areas of instruction.

- Understanding of the requisite courses and preparation needed for acceptance and success at a four-year college or university.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
- Ability to effectively communicate with diverse communities and develop outreach strategies to encourage parental involvement in student learning.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective professional development programs.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and engage diverse parents/guardians with varied communication styles, levels of skill, and experience to support their child’s education experience.
- Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to the needs of diverse learners.
- Familiarity or experience with electronic leave reporting/substitute requesting systems (eg SmartFind Express), electronic grade reporting (eg Power Teacher GradeBook) and electronic teacher/parent communication tool (e.g. ParentConnect) and ability to use instructional technology hardware such as document cameras, presenters, and SmartBoards etc.
- Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or Power Point preferred).
Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
- Hold or be eligible for Educator Certification: Professional Eligibility Certificate (PEC) issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required; or
- Hold or be eligible for Educator License: Initial Professional License (IPL) issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required; or
- Hold or be eligible for School Counselor Certification issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required.
