Insulator: Plumber Helper

JOB SUMMARY
Based on the needs of the Plumbing Department and the time of year, assists Mechanics with new installation, repairs on all types of insulation, plumbing, and mechanical systems to aid in controlling noise and maintaining systems for domestic water, fire suppression, and cooling and heating systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Covers or seals insulation with preformed plastic covers, canvas strips, sealant, or tape to secure insulation according to the type of insulation used and structure that is being covered.
- Covers, seals or finishes insulated surfaces or access holes with plastic covers, canvas strips, sealants, tape, cement or asphalt mastic.
- Fits and installs different types of insulation materials around pipes, ductwork, equipment, structures and install protective coverings such as applications consisting of plastic, sheet metal, and canvas as required.
- Prepares surfaces for insulation application by brushing or spreading adhesives, cement, mastic and asphalt or by attaching metal pins to surfaces.
- Measures and cuts insulation for covering surfaces utilizing industry standard hand tools.
- Assists in the repair and replacement of plumbing and mechanical systems.
- Cuts, fits, and joins piping such as copper, PVC, steel, and grooved and cast-iron and determines quantity of materials required to complete daily assigned tasks.
- Determines quantity of materials required to complete daily assigned tasks.
- Respond to emergency situations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required; and
- Technical or Vocational School Beyond High School preferred.
Experience
- One (1) year insulation or plumbing experience in the mechanical and or industrial setting preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Ability to learn manufacturers required installation practices for plumbing and/or insulation materials.
- Ability to learn commonly used plumbing and insulation practices and concepts.
- Ability to learn procedures and regulations pertaining to hazardous materials.
- Ability to learn commercial plumbing and mechanical systems such as flush valves, faucets, and pumps and connecting all types of piping.
- Ability to learn to make independent judgments and decisions within established parameters.
- Ability to learn the content of and skill in reading, interpreting and applying work orders, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, drawings and specifications, and manufacturers manuals.
- Ability to practice and enforce safety regulations applicable to work performed.
- Knowledge to safely use all standard plumbing and insulation hand tools required to perform work associated with tasks as outlined in this job description.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
- Ability to employ business technology tools (e.g. E-mail, AACPS Intranet, electronic benefits enrollment tool, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).
- Provides basic hand tools.
Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
- Within 120 days, obtain Plumbing Apprentice Plumber License issued by Maryland Board of Plumbing required; and
- Within 2 years, obtain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification issued by American Heart Association, Inc (AHA) or American Red Cross authorized training centers required; and
- Within 2 years, obtain Confined Space Training issued by an OSHA-approved training center required; and
- Within 2 years, obtain Mobile Elevating Work Platforms Training issued by AACPS required. and
- Upon hire, Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required.
- Proof of a good driving record required.
- Daily access to reliable transportation.
Driving Requirements
- Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position.

CAREER LADDER REQUIREMENTS
Qualification Requirements for Employment in Higher Grade as a New Hire or Transfer requires:
- Two (2) additional years continuous successful experience required.
- Plumbing Apprentice Plumber License required.
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification required.
- Mobile Elevating Work Platforms Training required.
- Confined Space Training issued by an OSHA-approved training center required.
Eligibility for Consideration for Advancement from Lower Grade to Higher Grade requires:
- Two (2) years continuous successful experience in the position at the Lower Grade level.
- Mastery of all responsibilities and duties of the position.
- Achievement of Professional Certification, License or evidence of course completion in pursuit of such certification or license, if applicable.
- Evidence of completion of additional training that may be recommended by supervisor and/or participation in approved professional development programs or courses, approved in advance by the supervisor. Successful completion of a minimum of one professional development within the last two years is required. Successful completion of job specific professional developments identified on the job description, performance evaluations and/or the supervisor’s documented recommendation are required.
- Achievement of identified goals as they relate to the needs of the district and as established by the supervior.
- Consistent maintenance of an effective and orderly work environment.
- Consistent compliance with general office procedures such as standards contained in the AACPS Employee Handbook; demonstration of discretion and excellent customer service; regular and punctual attendance; and building dress code, including wearing AACPS ID badge.
- Above Satisfactory overall job performance for the two most recent consecutive years of Performance Ratings.
- Letter of Recommendation written by the supervisor.
