JOB SUMMARY
Provides specialized instruction through a continuum of services to address the needs of students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing. Plans, develops, selects and modifies instructional materials and lessons while considering the language and communication needs of students. Provides support and training to school staff to increase opportunities for students to access, participate in and progress in the general education curriculum. May supervise students in a variety of school-related environments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plans, develops, selects, modifies, prepares and presents lessons, assignments, and instructional plans and materials for students who are deaf or hard of hearing including provision of support to students in the general education environment, curriculum development, pilot testing of new materials, and coordination on inter-agency and intra-agency support services for students.
- Development of awareness and orientation programs for staff members.
- Demonstrates and uses teaching strategies to present content to students.
- Provides an atmosphere and environment conductive to the intellectual, physical, social, and the emotional development of children.
- Maintains discipline in the classroom conductive to effective learning.
- Keeps attendance and grade records as required by board policy/administrative regulation.
- Arranges and participates in teacher-parents and teacher-student conferences as needed regarding progress and problems of assigned students.
- Attends and actively participates in staff meetings, professional development and serves on special committees.
- Provides input regarding the planning of instructional goals, objectives and methods.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing from a regionally accredited college or university required.
- Master's Degree in Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing from a regionally accredited college or university preferred.
Experience
- experience teaching the deaf and/or hard of hearing preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Knowledge of school organization, goals and objectives with special emphasis on teaching techniques related to providing instruction to students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing.
- Knowledge of materials, current trends and research in field of specialization.
- Knowledge of varied language and communication modes and methods used by students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing.
- Knowledge and facility of signing and interpreting.
- Knowledge of and proficiency in technical areas of instruction.
- Ability to speak and write effectively.
- Ability to interact effectively with students, staff and parents.
- Ability to effectively communicate with diverse communities and develop outreach strategies to encourage parental involvement in student learning.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and engage diverse parents/guardians with varied communication styles, levels of skill and experience to support their child’s education experience.
- Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to the needs of diverse learners.
- Job requires direct in-person provision of service, therefore punctual, regular and predictable attendance is essential.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
- Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).

Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
- Hold or be eligible for Educator Certification: Professional Certificate appropriate to the assigned teaching content area issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required; or
- Hold or be eligible for Educator License: Initial Professional License (IPL) issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required.
Driving Requirements
- Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position.
