Position Summary        

Is this position exempt from overtime pay?

No

Serves as mentor and coach, providing individualized professional development and support to first, second, and third year teachers, and experienced new hires.  The Right Start Advisor guides novice teachers and experienced new hires to be results oriented as they integrate into the teaching profession and to the philosophy, goals, and responsibilities of teaching at Anne Arundel County Public Schools.  Right Start Advisors will partner teach in the classrooms of beginning teachers, engage new teachers in cognitive coaching experiences, and provide professional development experiences to enhance professional learning.  Right Start Advisors may be assigned to work in more than one school.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Does this position have supervisory responsibilities?

No

1.  Supports novice teachers and new hires in building their teaching capacity.

2.  Communicates the procedures, mission, vision, and culture of AACPS and the school community.

3.  Provides supports to assigned 1st, 2nd and 3rd year teachers, non-tenured teachers, and experienced new hires.

4.  Promotes implementation of the Teaching and Learning Cycle, curriculum documents, and timelines for instruction.

5.  Observes student learning, collects data, and provides coaching to improve classroom instruction.

6.  Supports new teachers with data analysis in order to plan, teach, and assess for learning.

7.  Assists new teachers to employ a variety of teaching strategies to respond to the needs of diverse learners.

Models, coaches, and plans for effective classroom management.

Assists new teachers to formulate and monitor personal professional development plans.

8.  Collaborates with administrators and school-based department chairs and team leaders.

9.  Helps teachers to locate necessary resources, both material and personnel.

10.    Promotes understanding of the relationships between student achievement, effective instruction, classroom management, and partnerships with parents.

11.    Teaches, models, and reinforces appropriate human relations and communications skills.

12.    Guides and supports novice teachers with the successful completion of required reporting instruments.

13.    Participates in specified professional development as assigned.

14.    Maintains documentation related to the New Teacher Support program.

Education

·  Hold, or have completed the coursework required to receive, an Advanced Professional Certificate (APC) from the Maryland State Department of Education.

 

Experience

·   Must have completed successful experience as a Right Start Advisor

·  A thorough grasp of instructional practices and pedagogy and an in-depth knowledge of content.

·  Evidence of excellent written and oral communication skills.

·  Ability and willingness to demonstrate effective teaching practices with students in the classroom setting.

·  Ability and willingness to learn and apply cognitive, instructional, and technical coaching skills.

·  Demonstrated ability to work and effectively communicate with diverse populations.

·  Ability to effectively communicate with diverse communities and develop outreach strategies to encourage parental involvement in student learning.

·  Demonstrated ability to work effectively and engage with diverse parents/guardians with varied communications styles, levels of skill, and experience to support their child’s education.

·  Ability to employ and demonstrate a variety of teaching strategies to work effectively with diverse populations.

·  Demonstrated ability to work with adult learners.

·  Familiarity or experience with electronic leave report/substitute requesting systems (eg SmartFind Express), electronic grade reporting (eg Power Teacher GradeBook) and electronic teacher/parent communication tool (e.g. ParentConnect) and ability to use instructional technology hardware such as document cameras, presenters, and SmartBoards etc.

·  Demonstrated proficiency with business software (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite-Word, Excel, Outlook and/or PowerPoint preferred).

·  Possess a valid Motor vehicle Operator’s license and have daily access to a car.
