JOB SUMMARY
Assists Special education, McKinney-Vento and Non-public students during their transportation to and from school. Work involves responsibility for physically aiding special needs students when boarding and exiting the alternative school vehicle, and for overseeing the students to provide the alternative school vehicle driver freedom to operate the vehicle safely. Exercises constant alertness to students' physical/emotional difficulties and mental limitations and is prepared to act promptly in the event of medical issues and other problems. The nature of the work may require stooping, pushing, pulling, carrying, bending, lifting, and sustaining 40 lbs. independently, as well as assisting students in wheelchairs by pushing/pulling of various weights up to and including persons in excess of 200lbs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists students when boarding and exiting the alternative school vehicle, occasionally lifting them when necessary and/or operating mechanical lift apparatus.
- Assigns students to seats and adjusts safety straps and ensure seat belts are worn properly.
- Safely store crutches, orthopedic aids and student possessions.
- Observes students during their transportation and reacts promptly to behavioral and/or physical needs.
- Assists students during medical emergencies.
- Ensures students requiring a method of transportation change at a shuttle point are safely and properly transferred to the correct vehicle.
- May assist or prepare reports of behavioral problems encountered with the students during their transportation to and from school.
- Attends required in-service training and workshops as established by the Transportation Division.
- Works cooperatively with alternative vehicle drivers, parents, students and other staff members.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate preferred.
Experience
- One (1) year knowledge of and/or experience in dealing with special needs students preferred.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to exercise considerable patience and to assist the physically, emotionally and mentally handicapped students during their transportation to and from school.
- Ability to work cooperatively with students and parents.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
- Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).
Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
- Hold or be eligible for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification issued by American Heart Association, Inc (AHA) or American Red Cross authorized training centers required; and
- Hold or be eligible for First Aid Certification issued by American Heart Association, Inc (AHA) or American Red Cross authorized training centers required.
- Hold or be eligible for Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification issued by AACPS/Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) preferred.
