JOB SUMMARY

The special educator is responsible for completing in-depth academic assessments, including the accurate administration and scoring of standardized assessments, informal assessments, classroom observations, analyzing classroom performance and work samples, and collaboration with school and central office staff members. Collaborates with the school team to develop the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP), and participates in IEP team meetings. Acts as a system-wide resource on the administration of standardized and informal academic assessments, and provides regular professional development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Administers, scores, and analyzes individually administered standardized academic assessments.
  • Utilizes the Examiner’s Manual and technical information for each assessment.
  • Utilizes informal academic assessments.
  • Observes students in a variety of settings.
  • Works collaboratively with other members of IEP team, central office staff members, school-based staff members, students, and families.
  • Incorporates classroom performance data, work samples, and informal assessment into the academic assessment report.
  • Assists with the IEP process for assigned cases.
  • Communicates with families and school staff throughout the assessment process.
  • Improves his/her own professional growth through an on-going program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at universities, colleges, institutions of higher education.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education

  • Master's Degree in related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required.

Experience

  • Five (5) years successful experience administering and interpreting formal and informal assessments required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

  • In depth knowledge of special education processes and commercially available academic assessments.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates a strong diagnostic background and the ability to analyze data in determining instructional implications.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide professional development.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and collaboration as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).

Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.

  • Hold or be eligible for Special Education Certificate issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required.
  • Upon hire, Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required; and
  • Daily access to reliable transportation.

  • Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position.
