JOB SUMMARY Under the direction of the supervising teacher or administrator, Personal Support Assistant: Adult Disability (PSA) directly assists disabled adult employee with physical and instructional needs in an academic setting. Duties may include supervision of students throughout the school day, both in the school building and on work sites, carrying out instructional tasks at the direction of and supervised by the disabled employee, and supporting disabled employee with personal hygiene and self-care. PSA(s) must be capable of performing any and all of the listed duties individually or independently which may vary based upon their work location/assignment and available staffing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Directly assists employee with physical needs, including, but not limited to personal hygiene, self-care, toileting, feeding, and other needs as assigned by the position throughout the school day and/or while at off-site locations.
- Assists employee to gather and prepare materials necessary to support instruction and curriculum tasks, including but not limited to, assistance reaching high or low objects and/or making copies using standard office equipment.
- Participates in routine supervision of students throughout the school day within the school building and/or worksite /community environment.
- Assists employee to support students during instruction and other curriculum tasks. Provides reinforcement techniques to keep students focused and on task.
- Assists employee to observe and manage behavior of students in the classroom, lunch areas, playground, and other learning environments according to approved procedures.
- Assists employee to observe instructional and behavioral goals and provide data collection to the supervising teacher.
- Assists employee to support students with social, emotional, and behavior concerns.
- Follows AACPS policies & procedures while assisting employee, students, and staff in the building and off-site work training activities and/or community-based settings.
- Participates in professional development; attends workshops and in-service training for all specialized related care needs as provided by Board of Education.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
Experience
- One (1) year experience assisting persons with disabilities and preferred;
- One (1) year experience in K-12 academic setting preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Ability to exercise considerable patience and the ability to work with physically, mentally, and/or emotionally disabled staff in an academic setting.
- Job requires direct in-person provision of service, therefore punctual, regular and predictable attendance is essential.
- Excellent interpersonal and organization skills.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
- Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).
Licenses and Certifications Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
- Hold or be eligible for Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required; and
- Daily access to reliable transportation.

- Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position.
