Technician: Assistive Technology

JOB SUMMARY Provides technical support, hardware and software training, augmentative and assistive computer devices and dedicated communication technology to school staff, parents, and students. Travels to schools and homes to deliver software and equipment. Performs daily, weekly, and monthly technical maintenance to ensure efficient and optimal operation of computer related equipment. Provides administrative support. The position may be 10 or 12 months depending on assignment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists in the acquisition of software and hardware including communication with vendors, obtaining quotes, and purchasing of items.
- Maintains and documents inventory of all hardware and software purchased for the Assistive Technology Office and conducts year-end inventory of returned equipment.
- Troubleshoots and maintains software and hardware malfunctions including minor repairs.
- Programs equipment/devices based on individual student needs.
- Delivers assistive technology software and equipment to schools, installs computers and peripherals for student use including set up prior to the new school year and collaborates with AACPS Division of Technology to ensure that assistive technology devices work within the capabilities and procedures of the AACPS network.
- Provides technical assistance and training to school staff, parents, and students in the instructional use of hardware, software, assistive technology devices and adaptive hardware and software.
- Assists in the development and modification of augmentative/assistive communication technology.
- Establishes and maintains subject-matter files, database, records, lists or other file maintenance systems.
- Composes letters, memoranda, instruction, notices, or other forms of communication on a variety of subjects relative to the functions and programs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
Additional Duties
- Based on assignment, processes returns and transfers of equipment during summer months.
- Based on assignment, delivers and repairs equipment for Extended School Year (ESY) services.
- Based on assignment, provides training to staff working during Extended School Year (ESY) with Assistive and Augmentative Communication (AAC) devices.

Education
- Other: Minimum of 30 hours of training in childhood communication disorders, computer technology and/or working with students with disabilities via classes as offered by Anne Arundel County Public Schools or equivalent. required.
- Associate's Degree in applicable field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required;
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the applicant to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Experience
- Two (2) years office experience and direct experience with functional communication devices (hardware, software) and required.
- Previous experience working with technical operations and/or students with disabilities preferred.

- Experience with training staff in the use of software systems.
- Experience with troubleshooting to identify problems and solutions related to use of software systems.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
- Demonstrated proficiency with business software (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite-Word, Excel, Outlook and/or PowerPoint preferred). For new permanent secretarial/clerical/technician hires, a minimum score on a pre-employment assessment is required.
Licenses and Certifications Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
- Hold or be eligible for Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required; and
- Daily access to reliable transportation.

- Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position.
