JOB SUMMARY Operates a school vehicle transporting McKinney-Vento, Special Education and Non-public students to and from schools. Work involves a responsibility to conduct daily safety inspection; notifying appropriate persons in case of mechanical breakdowns, delays or accidents; and completing required forms as designated. The nature of the work may require stooping, pushing, pulling, carrying, bending, lifting, and sustaining 40 lbs. independently, as well as assisting students in wheelchairs by pushing/pulling of various weights up to and including persons in excess of 200lbs.
Additional Work Days/Hours Based on the assignment, the following additional work days and/or hours may be required as needed:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operates a school vehicle in transporting students.
- Makes pre-trip and post trip safety inspections before and after operation; and reports mechanical defects to repair shop personnel, accordingly.
- Drives vehicle in a safe and prudent manner, obeying all State and local traffic laws and Transportation Division Regulations.
- Transports and discharges only authorized students at designated schools/locations.
- Maintains discipline of students aboard the alternative school vehicle; and reports cases of misbehavior or other problems to school administration/Transportation officials.
- Adheres to and maintains assigned work schedules and designated routes. Reports any prolonged traffic delays and/or lateness to supervisors.
- Notifies appropriate persons in case of mechanical breakdowns.
- Reports all accidents and completes required report as instructed.
- Attends in-service training as prescribed under COMAR 13.a.06.07.09B and as conducted by the Transportation Division.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
Experience
- Three (3) years actual driving experience during which time a valid operator’s license was held required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Some knowledge of and/or experience in dealing with special needs students preferred
- Ability to exercise considerable patience and to assist special needs students during their transportation to and from school.
- Ability to work cooperatively with staff, students, and parents.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
- Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).
Licenses and Certifications Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
- Hold or be eligible for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification issued by American Heart Association, Inc (AHA) or American Red Cross authorized training centers preferred; and
- Hold or be eligible for First Aid Certification issued by American Heart Association, Inc (AHA) or American Red Cross authorized training centers preferred.
- Hold or be eligible for Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification issued by AACPS/Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) preferred.
- Upon hire, Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required; and
- Proof of a good driving record required.
- Daily access to reliable transportation.

Qualification Requirements for Employment in Higher Grade as a New Hire or Transfer requires:
- Two (2) additional years continuous successful experience required.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with Passenger Transport (P) and School Bus Authorized (S) endorsement (Maryland) issued by Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) required.
Eligibility for Consideration for Advancement from Lower Grade to Higher Grade requires:
- Two (2) years continuous successful experience in the position at the Lower Grade level.
- Mastery of all responsibilities and duties of the position.
- Achievement of Professional Certification, License or evidence of course completion in pursuit of such certification or license, if applicable.
- Evidence of completion of additional training that may be recommended by supervisor and/or participation in approved professional development programs or courses, approved in advance by the supervisor. Successful completion of a minimum of one professional development within the last two years is required. Successful completion of job specific professional developments identified on the job description, performance evaluations and/or the supervisor’s documented recommendation are required.
- Achievement of identified goals as they relate to the needs of the district and as established by the supervior.
- Consistent maintenance of an effective and orderly work environment.
