Position Summary          

Is this position exempt from overtime pay?

No

Responsible for facilitating cross-cultural communication through the process of converting one language into a different language to ensure meaningful and accurate communication between two parties who do not speak the same language.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Does this position have supervisory responsibilities?

No

1. Provides consecutive interpretation services at one-on-one or small group meetings.

2. Provides simultaneous interpretation service at larger meetings or when requested at small group meetings.

3. Sight translates documents upon request during meetings.

4. Makes phone calls to families who speak languages other than English.

5. Maintains interpreter ethics at all times.

6. Researches relevant issues and technical terms as needed

7. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

·  High School Diploma.  Bachelor's degree preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

·  Must be eligible to work in the United States.

·  Must be 18 years or older.

·  Must attend AACPS Interpreter Training Part 1:  Basic Interpreter Skills and Ethics Part 2 (for work in special education) Interpreting in Special Education Settings. 

·  Outstanding customer service.

·  Must be able to travel to different schools around the county.

·  Excellent listening, verbal, and written language skills for both English and another language

·  Ability to accurately interpret conversation and presentation.

·  Knowledge of advanced grammar and usage in both languages.

·  Knowledge of school system terminology.

·  Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.  Ability to effectively communicate with diverse communities and develop outreach strategies to encourage parental involvement in student learning. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and engage diverse parents/guardians with varied communication styles, levels of skill and experience to support their child’s education experience.

·  Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to response to the needs of diverse learners.

·  Ability to employ business technology tools (e.g. E-mail, AACPS Intranet, electronic benefits enrolment tool, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).
